Mission Beach residents have always been galvanised when the issue of boating facilities comes up. In 2010, debates were quite heated about who could use the Clump Point boat ramp (recreational or commercial or both) and the idea of a marina was still being floated.

The first gravel road constructed was from El Arish to Bingil Bay. It wasn't finished until 1936, which was 51 years after the Cuttens arrived. There was much anxiety about roads with good reason, yet if you look at the image below of an Innisfail street in 1925 during the wet season, our desire for good roads was not exclusive to us.

Penny and Roger Phillips came from South Australia to live in Mission Beach in 1994. They established the popular Flying Pig Delicatessen, in a shopping centre at Mission Beach which was promoted widely using a pink fibreglass flying pig on top of a red sign.

Small towns can create great commotions about things that may seem minor to those outside the town. Small dogs frequently bark at larger dogs, and small towns also tend to make a lot of noise due to their size.
Wategos Beach is a small beach located on the north side of Cape Byron. It's part of the popular tourist town in NSW, Byron Bay. Byron was a small town when the goats started to cause a kerfuffle many years ago, but it has grown to over 10,000 residents today.

This Sketch examines the history of Mission Beach’s population changes and briefly looks at the growth patterns of some other towns in the Cassowary Coast region.
For these purposes, the town of Mission Beach is defined as the area where many residents will say Mission Beach when asked by interstate people where they live. That means people living in the settlements at Carmoo, the Family Islands, South Mission Beach, Wongaling Beach, Mission Beach, Narragon Beach, Bingil Bay, Brookes Beach, Garners Beach, Midgereebar and Maria Creek. In 2016, the time of the last census, the 4852 Post Code area boundaries (shown below) covered all these ‘Mission Beach’ villages apart from Maria Creek.
